So,you have
decided to have your first chalkboard wall.
Great it’s really a
smart choice, considering its usefulness as described in my article here and
here .
Making a chalkboard wall is fairly easy. It took me about 30 minutes and
I am a really slow. Special chalkboard paint is made by most major paint
manufacturers usually available in a variety of colors at your local hardware
store.
you will need:
- Painter's tape
- Sand paper
- nail/screw remover
- spackle (if there are holes in the wall after removing the nails)
- chalkboard paint
- primer (optional)
Step 1 - Prepare the Wall
First, use the painter's tape to Frame the section of the
wall you wish to paint using painter ‘s tape . Clean the area of any
obstructions including removing any
nails or screws and filling in any holes left with spackle. Leave it to dry ,and sand the
surface flat.
If the wall is
painted in some glossy paint , remove it by sanding the whole area, helping the
chalkboard paint adhere more effectively. Alternatively, you can paint over the
whole surface with primer before attempting to apply the chalkboard layer. If
you do opt for primer, let it dry thoroughly before proceeding.
Step 2 - Apply the Chalkboard Paint
Stir the chalkboard paint, and then apply a coat of paint directly
to the wall just as you would any other wall paint. Let the coat dry as per
manufacturer's manual Then apply a second coat.
Let this dry for a full three days, and then carefully
remove the painter's tape.
Step 3 –Paint a Frame
To create a separation between the chalkboard and the rest
of the wall, paint a frame in a contrasting color.
Step 4 - Prepare the Wall for Use
Before you use your New chalkboard wall or show it off to
your friends, condition it with a layer of chalk dust. For this, use the broad
side of a big chalk piece and drag it along the entire surface of your
chalkboard.
When you have
filled in the entire surface, erase it all with the chalkboard eraser. Your
chalkboard wall is now ready to use.
Step 5 - Maintaining Your Chalkboard
To
clean your chalkboard wall, simply wipe it clean as needed with a damp cloth. And
repeat Step 4
Installing
racks or nails with strings to store the chalk when not in use would be a
welcome addition.
VOILA!! your wall is ready.
